How to Choose a Badminton Racket

This is one of the commonest questions that badminton lovers generally ask from badminton players.

Are you the one who really love this game, but don't have your own racket? Choosing a good racket for oneself can be difficult at first, because racket is the most important equipment in badminton. The type of racket you choose should match your playing capabilities. Here, we are discussing few important things that you can consider while choosing a racket. These are:

Weight of the racket: - Generally, lightweight rackets are recommended for learners. An ideal racket weighs between 80g to 90g. Choosing a lightweight racket allows you to respond quickly. It also provides comfort to your wrist and shoulders while playing, thus reducing the chances of surgeries.

Handgrip: - The handgrip of a racket can be chosen by considering the following two things:

A) Types of badminton grips

The two types of badminton grips on the badminton racket are:
• Towel grips: - These kinds of Grips are soft and good absorber of sweat. Towel Grip Based Rackets are most commonly used by the beginners.
• Synthetic Grips: - Synthetic grips are slippery. Such kinds of grips are less comfortable due to its poor sweat absorption ability.

B) Size of badminton grips

Generally most of the racket grips come in four sizes. Bigger grips based rackets are chosen by most of the players, because bigger grips are helpful to generate more power.

Strings: - Badminton strings are the most important component of Rackets. You need to pick an appropriate string and string tension. Some of the good string brands are Gosen, Mizuno, Ashaway, etc. and recommended string tensions for beginners is 19-20lbs, for intermediate players is 21-24lbs and for advance players is 25+ lbs.

Brand: - There are many badminton brands available in the market, such as Yonex, Victor, Head, Wilson, Carlton, etc. Yonex is the most well established brand among all the brands and its badminton rackets are more expensive than others.

Weight distribution: - There are basically three kinds of badminton rackets available viz. head-light, even-balanced and head-heavy. Head-heavy rackets are more powerful than head-light. Players mostly use head-heavy rackets for singles and balance rackets for doubles.

Less stiffness:- The flexibility of the racket has an influence on its feel. Generally, flexible shafts are designed for beginner as it helps in good control. The weight and balance of a racket can be measured, but stiffness cannot be calculated. Thus, before taking a badminton racket, you should test play with different rackets in order to make the right choice.

Finding a suitable racket is really a demanding task. You need to find a suitable racket by considering your physical build and way of swinging the racket.
