Shopping Amritsar

The markets of the Old City are much more exotic than the main shopping areas of the New city, which are not very different from the Lajpat Nagar, featuring the usual rows of designer shops. The hall Bazaar in the Purana shehar and the areas surrounding the Kotwali are vast and traditional shopping areas.

So are the innumerable Katras, peddling everything from jewellery to kitchenware. Their pickles and papad are famous. Then are the ubiquitous turbans, salwars and handkerchiefs with Onkar motifs and the special Punjabi jootis. The bazaar outside Darbaar Sahib is the place to go for stainless steel cutlery and consecrated weaponary. Ceremonial Talwars start at Rs 125, with scabbards thrown in.
