The Mutual Fund industry of India was started in 1963 by an Act of Parliament. This association was set up by the Reserve Bank of India and works under the Regulations and administrative control of the Reserve bank of India. The history of mutual funds in India is divided into four segments. The first phase was started from 1964 to 1987. In this phase, the reserve bank of India started functioning on it. In 1978, over-all control on mutual funds was taken by the Industrial Development bank of India. In the second phase in between 1987 to 1993 it marked as the entry of public sector funds. Many of public sector banks, a Life insurance Corporation of India, General Insurance Corporation of India were starting work on mutual funds. All other Indian banks started work with after one another.
Third phase includes the private sector banks in this industry. It was from the 1993 to 2003. All the Private sector banks started work together with the Mutual fund industry. The first private sector mutual fund bank Franklin Templeton was registered in July 1993. In the last fourth phase, it started from 2003 to present. Many of new industries, banks and corporations are working with mutual fund industry. All the stocks of Mutual fund association are listed on the National stock exchange of India limited, Bombay Stock Exchange of India Limited, Reserve Bank of India, National Institute of Securities Markets and SEBI investors Awareness website.
