Justice Ranjan Gogoi is set to assume responsibility as the 46th Chief Justice of India on October 3, 2018. He will have a regime of around 13 months till November 17, 2019. His term as Chief Justice closes on 17 November 2019. He is the primary individual from Northeast India and the principal Assamese to wind up Chief Justice of India. Ranjan Gogoi is the child of Congress pioneer Kesab Chandra Gogoi who dealt in as Assam Chief Minister for two months in 1982. Gogoi went to Don Bosco in Dibrugarh, before moving to Delhi to finish pre-college and graduate examinations. He learned at St. Stephen's College, Delhi, graduating with distinction ever. He at that point went to Delhi University, where he got a law degree.

In 1978, Justice Gogoi was first enlisted as an advocate. Further, he moves to proceed in Gauhati High Court. He practiced in the department of constitutional, tax collection and organization matters. On September 9, 2010, Justice Ranjan was relocated to the Punjab and Haryana court. Inside a couple of months, on 12 February 2011, Justice Gogoi was designated as the enduring judge of the Guwahati high court. He later turned into the Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana high court on February 12, 2011. In the time of 23 April 2012, he was elected as a Judge of the Supreme Court.
