Atomic power station Bulandshahr

Narora atomic  power station(NAPS) is located at Narora in Bulandshar with the twin capacity of 220mw(e) each.  The construction of Narora Atomic Power Project (NAPP 1&2) started in the year 1976 and the two units began commercial operation in the years 1991 and 1992 respectively. Its foundation was laid by Nuclear power corporation of India(NPCIL).  Narora is the fourth atomic power station in India.

It generates 440 KW of nuclear power daily and feeds it to the Northern Power Grid. Altogether seven States are its beneficiaries. The entire operation of power generation at Narora is silent and eco-friendly. The aim of NAPS is to produce power as a safe, environmentally benign and economically viable source of energy.

NAPS generates low and intermediate level liquid, solid and gaseous wastes during it separation and maintenance.  The generation of wastes is controlled at source itself.  The wastes are managed by appropriate treatment before releasing to the environment. Different types of liquid wastes are treated by chemical co-precipitation, ion exchange, evaporation, filtration, and dilution technique. For handlingand conditioning of solid wastes, volume reduction techniques such as incineration and baling are employed. The treated wastes are immobilised by incorporation into cement and polymer matrices. Gaseous waste is cleaned bypassing through pre-filters and high efficiency particulate (HEPA) filters.

Recently it has achieved a feat. The Bureau of Indian Standards presented it the ISO-14001 certification for its excellent track record in environmental safety.  India is the first country to enact legislation to provide for the protection and improvement of environment in its constitution.
