History Of Pune

Pune wears on its sleeve a glorious past of over 600 years. Also known as Punyanagari, it is at this holy palce where two rivers converge.
Shivaji was daring, ambitious and restless since his boyhood. He takes an indisputable place in the history of Pune.By the age of 19 he had become the head of a band of intrepid fighters.The city is a witness to some legendary battles of the Nizams, the Mughals, the Marathas, the Peshwas and finally the British. Pune gained importance during the period of the second Peshwa Thorala. It is during this time that the palace of the Peshwas, The Shaniwarwada was built.

The death of the Maratha power saw the birth of the British rule. The town of Pune also became the centre of many reform movements during the British Raj. Also during the heyday of Bal Gangadhar Tilak and GK Gokhale, the two maralte references, it was the epicentre of Indian independence movement.
