Places to Visit Rishikesh

Temples, ashrams and yoga centers are the reason that attracts many tourists to Rishikesh every year. Foreigners visit this place in large number mainly due to meditation and yoga. Rishikesh is the synonym of Hindu’s culture and heritage which is glimpsed in the landmarks of the city. Rishikesh comprises of many tourists attraction including religious places and adventure sports activities.

Bharat Mandir
Situated in the banks of river Ganges, this temple was built by Adiguru Shankryacharya in 8th century. Considered as one of the oldest temples of the city, it is the important place to visit which is located in the center of the city. In the inner chamber of temple there is an idol of lord Vishnu.

Rishikund
Just located next to Triveni Ghat this place is one of the most significant tourist attractions in Rishikesh. According to the belief  this pond was drenched by Yamuna. It presents the beautiful reflection of temple Raghunath.

Triveni Ghat
Every evening this gaht is back to life with the procedure of Ganga Aarti. Everyday large number of pilgrims takes dip here.

Geeta Bhawan
Having the description of the Ramyana and the Mahabharata on its walls, this is the oldest temple complex in the city. Peace and the inner pleasure are provided by this place. It is the must visit place among the tourist destinations in Rishikesh.

Lakshman Jhula
The description of visiting places seems incomplete without the mention of Lakshman Jhula. It is a suspended bridge constructed in 1928. It is said that the river was crossed by Rama’s brother Lakshman by using jute rope. It offers a scenic view of the Rishikesh with the flowing Ganges downward.


Ashrams and the Meditation Centers

Rishikesh is also the well known place for attaining the spiritual education that is imparted in ashrams. In 1969 the famous music band of the west Beatles visited Rishikesh. They recorded their song “The Happy Rishikesh song” during their stay in Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's ashram. Besides Spiritual education, these ashrams also provide yoga and meditation training.
Kailas Ashram Brahmavidyapeetham has been promoting and preserving the traditional Vedantic Studies. Well known personalities such as Swami Vivekananda, Swami Rama Tirtha and Swami Shivananda have studied in this institution.
The other ashrams in Rishikesh are Paramarth Niketan, Omkaranand Ashram, Sivanand Ashram, Yoga Niketan , Omkaranand Ashram, Vedanta Ashram, Vanprastha Ashram, Shankaracharya Nagar Transcendental Meditation Centre, Vithal Ashram and Yoga Study Centre.
