City derived its name from the Naini Lake that is situated in the middle of the town.
According to Hindu mythology, Mata Sati committed Suicide at yajna of Daksha Prajapati, her body
was carried by lord Shiva and he roamed across the universe. During that period, Sati's eye fell near the
lake, where the Naina Devi temple stands now.
