Culture And Cuisines Of Dehradun

As the capital of the new state Uttarakhand, Dehradun is bustling, energetic,and live city. The famous Clock Tower(Ghanta Ghar) is the center of activities, and a famous landmark of the city. The numerous high schools of the city attract the brightest of the best students from all over the country, during the day it is common to see students dressed in various school uniforms to be moving around the city.

PEOPLE

The people are mostly tribes and follow the culture, that can be seen on special occasion. Music and dance called “Barada Nati’ is mostly seen during festivals. Other than tribes, Dehradun holds mix culture due to different communities that live here.

LANGUAGE

Though the common language is Hindi as previously it was the region of state Uttar Pradesh. Local tribes use different dialects like Kumaoni and Garhwali. English is also spoken due to its western tourists but Garhwali, Kumaoni, Sindhi, Urdu and Punjabi are the common languages of city.

CUISINE

Dehradun is famous among visitors for its delicious cuisine. People use large amount of milk and milk products in their foods, generally local people love to eat vegetarian food yet non vegetarian food is also famous among them. Dehraduni food contains lots of nutrition as many dishes are prepared from lentils, Singodi, Kandalee ka Saag, Kumaoni Raita, Gahat ki Dal, Aloo ke Gutke, Sani hui Muli, Nimbu, Singodi, Kaafli, Gulgula, and Kulath Phanu are the famous dishes among locals. In dessert people like to eat Jhangora ki Kheer, Bal mithai and famous Arsa.
