Overview Gangtok

Gangtok is the largest town in the mountainous state of Sikkim, situated at an elevation of 5500 feet. The capital of Sikkim, Gangtok is also the headquarters of the East Sikkim district. Gangtok is an important trade link between India and Tibet, and currently, it is the busiest business and administrative hub. The town is a pure combination of ancient and modern culture with houses having crude designs, giving an opportunity to the visitors to experience both the old and new traditions.
In 1840, after the construction of the Enchey Monastery, the town rose to prominence as a popular Buddhist pilgrimage site. Presently, Gangtok is a center of Tibetan Buddhist culture and learning, with the presence of distinct spiritual and educational institutions, monasteries and centers of Tibetology.
