Overview Gaya

Gaya is a city of ancient historical and mythological significance. It is the 2nd largest city of the Bihar and is also the headquarters of Magadh division and Gaya district. The city is located on the banks of the Phalgu River and is surrounded by small rocky hills Ram-Shila, Brahmayoni, Mangla-Gauri and Brahmayoni. The city is the perfect combination of old buildings, natural surroundings, narrow bylanes and green areas.

The city finds mention in the renowned epics, Mahabharata and Ramayana. Gaya is named after the name of demon Gayasur. Lord Vishnu killed Gayasur by using the pressure of his foot. It is believed that this incident transformed Gayasur into the series of rocky hills that made up the landscape of this city.
