It is stated that Raja Karna a central character in the Mahabharata war founded this state.Karnalaya is the original name of this state.Karna was the eldest son of Kunti, so the is also known as the city of Daanvir Karna.It has been a walled town as far as its history can be traced and it may have had a citadel at one time.
In 1739 Persian emperor Nadir Shah defeated and caputured the Mughal ruler Muhammad Shah in the Battle of Karnal, this state gain the relative importance.
In the year 1763 Raja Gopal Singh of jind catch hold of this state and after that Marathas set up themselves in 1785 at Karnal.The battle between the Marathas and the Sikhs continued till 1795, when Marathas finally took control of the city from the emperor of Jind Raja Bhag Singh and also the commander of the British-Irish military, who supports and took part in the battle.In the year 1811 British set up their cantonment, but left this state after 30 years, when malaria breaks out.The Britishers took control of the fort which was built by Gajpat Singh of Jind, and converted the fort into the residence for Dost Mohammad Khan. The fort act as the quarters of native cavalry and as a jail.After that this fort converted into the Education Department, and the school was moved into it from the city.
