Overview Kolhapur

Kolhapur is one of the districts in Maharashtra placed on the banks of Panchganga River and bounded by lush green Sahyadri mountain range. Kolhapur was established by Tarabai in year 1707 after the succession fight over the Maratha kingship. The city is well known for its marvellous temples, historic forts and royal palaces. The city is famous for its manufacturing sector, Kolhapuri chappal and hand crafted slipper.

The name of Kolhapur has been derived from the word ‘Kolhasur’ which according to mythological event legend was a demon. Goddess Mahalakshmi killed that demon and before dying, the demon wished the place to be named after him, so, from then the city is known as Kolhapur.
