Art and Culture Kolhapur

Culture of the Kolhapur is a combination of variety which shows the history of the city. Lavani Dance is one of the famous dances of the city which is specially performed along with the beats of the dholak.

The Lavani dance has been derived from the word ‘Lavanya’ and the meaning of this word is ‘Beauty’. This dance is performed by the whole Maharashtra state at the times of cultural activities and occasional functions. Tamasha and Povadas are also the popular dance forms of the city.

Festivals: Ashtami is one of the main festivals in the city which is also known as Dahi Handi. In this festival a clay pot filled with buttermilk is hanged at a convenient height and involves creating a human pyramid. The topmost person on the human pyramid tries to break the handi and once broken, the buttermilk flows over the entire group. Apart from these, Shree Mahalakshmi Kiranotsav, Kolhapur Rankala Mahotsav, Gudi Padwa, Jyotiba Yatra, Holi, Ganesh Utsav, Navratri and Diwali are also celebrated in the city with great cheerfulness.
