History Of Mysore

The name of the city has come from the word Mahishuru, which is also derived from Mahisha, which also known as the town of Mahishasura in the local language Kannada. According to the beliefs, Mysore was ruled by the demon Kind Mahishasura. Mahishasura was a buffalo-headed monster. Lots of prayer by the Gods and Goddesses to save their life from the hands of the demon, leads Goddess Parvathi to take birth as Goddess Chamundeshwari who in response killed the monster on top of the Chamundi hill in the Mysore. Therefore the city is also known as Chamundi hill.

It is also stated that after Goddess Chamundeshwari killed the demon stayed on that hill, hence this area is worshipped by the people till today. Inscription was done is 950 A.D during the rule of Gangas on the hills of Chamundi. After the rule of Gangas, the Cholas ruled this city of Mysore for over a century. The Chalukyas followed the Cholas and then Hoysalas. Beautiful temples were made by the Hoysala during their reign.

Then Vijayanagar Kings and then the Mysore Yadu dynasty came to power in 1399A.D. The dynasty of Vijayanagar Kings and the Mysore Yadu have a great significant addition to the temple building in Mysore. Bettada Chamaraja Wodeyar, the raja of Mysore, called the city 'Mahishura Nagara' meaning the city of Mahishur. The inscriptions done in the period of the 17th century refer Mysore as 'Mahishuru'.

With the finest planning by the Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV leads the city of Mysore more marvelous. During his reign he built wide roads, magnificent building and elegant parks which makes this city more beautiful. With the quaint old world charm this modern city has reserve its charm. City of Mysore is famous for products like sandalwood and rosewood artifacts, stone sculptures, incense sticks, inlay work with ivory and its exquisite silk sarees all over the world.
