According to the 2001 census, Roorkee had the population of 252784 from which males comprise 53% while female are 47%. Hindus are the majority here as they are the 61% of the population followed by Muslims, 9% Punjabis/Sikhs, 0.3% Christians and 1.7% Jains. Hindi is the main language spoken in the region.
