Old City Amritsar

The streets around the complex are dotted with many gurudwaras and spots of historical interest. The temple is situated in the oldest area of the city, abutted by ancient, crowded bazaars dotted with elderly historical buildings. The residential house of the Gurus is on the west of the Guru Ram Das’s hut. This house which was converted into a gurudwara GURU KE MAHAL, after its beautification by Guru Arjan Dev and Guru Hargobind. Its large magnificent hall, houses the Guru Granth Sahab. The birth anniversary of Guru Teg Bahadur is also celebrated here on the occasion of Baisakhi.

GURUDWARA BABA ATAL SAHAB A simple memorial in the honour of Baba Atal, 9 year old son of Guru Hargobind was raised on the site originally. This 9 storey octagonal tower, over 45 metres high, stands close to the Kaulsar pool about 200 metres southeast of the Harimandir. The Guru Granth Sahib is seated in a small inner room on the ground floor. In the 1820s, Maharaja Ranjit Singh raised the upper floors of the memorial. Also nearby is the charming GURUDWARA SARAGARHI SAHIB. This miniature gurudwara standing on a pocket-sized lawn is in Kaiser Bagh, opposite the High school. This shrine was built by the Britishin 1902 as a tribute to the Sikh soldiers who died in the Third Anglo-Afghan War.

For the compilation of the Adi Granth – The Holy Book, Guru Arjan Dev chose a quiet spot, which is now known as GURUDWARA RAMSAR SAHIB. It lies to the south eastern side of the Amritsar, away from the chaos of the town. To make the vicinty more pleasing, a tank was dug ,which was named ramsar, after Guru Ram Das.bank of the Ramsar sarovar, this gurdwara is on the southeastern side of the walled city. Here, Guru Arjan also composed his famous Sukhmani, the Psalm of Peace, and with Bhai Gurdas Singh.

Near the Chativind Gate of the walled city GURDWARA SHAHIDGANJ BABA DIP SINGH, commemorates the martyrdom of Baba Dip Singh of the Shahid misi, who, was mortally wounded, while coming from Damdana Sahib in Bathinda district to liberate the Darbar Sahib, from the brutal attack of the Afghan invaders.
