History Of Patiala

Patiala name is made of two words 'Pati' that means land, and 'Ala' that is a name of Baba Ala Singh, Patiala city was founded in 1714 A.D by Baba Ala Singh, it was earlier known as 'Ala De Patti' as the place is associated with Baba Ala singh. He laid foundation of “Quila Mubarak”, whole city is built around it. During the period of “Maharaja Bhupindra” Patiala earned its name in the field of politics and sports, lots of architectural designs such as Patiala Aerodrome were constructed at the time.

After that his son Yadwindra Singh came forward to sign the Instrument of Accession and was appointed the Rajpramukh of the newly established Patiala and East Punjab States Union (PEPSU). Patiala was the first town in India who had its first degree college that is the “Mohindra College” built in 1870. Patiala gharana is one of the most prominent gharanas of vocal Hindustani Classical Music, it has given many musicians to Music Industry. “Ustad Ali Baksh”, his son “Ustad Akhtar Hussain” Khan and “Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan” got worldwide fame and glory.
