History Varanasi

Varanasi derived its name from the two rivers, the Varuna and Assi which were originated from the north and south side respectively. It is believed that if someone dies within the area marked by the Panch Kosi road would attain heaven as Varanasi has possessed the virtues of all other places of pilgrimage.

According to some earliest account the city dates back to 8000 years. Varanasi has rightly titled as “the city learning and burning,”. It has been the prominent place among pilgrims for attaining the divine knowledge and salvation. Buddha attained enlightenment here in 500 B.C. Varanasi is the right fusion of myth, religion and philosophy. Varanasi is also known for its rich tapestry of music, arts, crafts and education. But time to time its fell prey to many Muslim raiders resulted in the demolition of many original Hindu Temples which means that most of the building here were constructed in 18th Century.

It is said that the city was founder by Lord Shiva 5000 years ago. Besides its religious importance in Hindu Mythology, Varanasi had been the commercial and Industrial center for the production for its muslin and silk fabrics. Perfumes, sculpture, and ivory work were produced on the large scale in this city. It was also written by famous Chinese traveler Xuanzang in his traveling accounts that the city city was important center of religious, artistic activities and educational, that it stretched for about 5 km along the western bank of the Ganges.
