Places To See Varanasi

Since Varanasi is the oldest city of the world and an eminent pilgrim, large numbers of visitors throng to Varanasi from all over the world. Varanasi is an important center of spiritualism, mysticism, Indian philosophy and Hinduism which is depicted in its numerous numerous sects, temples, Ashrams and Ghats. There are many temples and Buddhist Stupas, Jain Temples are located in Varanasi.

JANTAR MANTAR It is famous observatory which is built by Jai Singh, Maharaja of Jaipur in 1737 AD. It was the part of series of Jantar Mantar that are built in Delhi, Mathura, Ujjain and Jaipur observatories .The purpose behind Jantar Mantar was to measure the local time,the Sun's declination, altitude, the declination of stars, planets and to determine eclipses . The Varanasi Jantar Mantar homes many astronomical instruments to measure the record the motion, speed and properties starts and planets and study astronomy which are still effective and accurate today

SARNATH It is the place where Gautama Buddha first gave teachings about Dharma after attaining of enlightenment. Located just 12 km away from Varanasi, it is one of the four sacred Buddhist sites .

RAMNAGAR FORT Built in red sandstone, The Ramnagar Fort was constructed in the 18th Century by Maharaja Balwant Singh. It has been the ancestral home for the Maharajas of Benaras. The Fort consists temple and a museum. The temple is dedicated to Ved Vyasa, writer of Mahabharata. It is said that Ved Vyasa had stayed in this fort for short period.

BANARAS HINDU UNIVERSITY It is the most reputed and well known educational institute of Varanasi. The great nationalist leader, Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, established BHU (Banaras Hindu University) in 1916 AD. Spreading over 1300 acres it consists of large campus, well maintained roads, green layout. On the other hand, a temple , campus buildings and an airstrip present a good example of architecture.

BHARAT KALA BHAVAN It is situated in the campus of the Banaras Hindu University which is established in 1920. It homes of the large collection of over lakh art pieces which consists of paintings, textiles, costumes, decorative arts, Indian philately and literary and archival materials. Numismatic Gallery (collection of coins), Archaeological Gallery, Decorative Art Gallery, Benaras Through the Ages Gallery and Galleries on Alice Boner are situated on its first floor while there are some proposed extensions of galleries such as Gallery of Archive and Literary Materials, Gallery on Textiles and Costumes and Gallery of Metal Images.

RAM NAGAR DURG Situated just 2 kilometers from the Kashi Hindu University, across the Ganges is located the fort which was built by the former kings of Kashi. This museum displays the royalty which used to be the glory of the kingdom.

St MARY CHURCH It is situated in the cantonment area of Varanasi and is spread across the area of 11.25 acres. There are many monuments in its campus which depicts the martyr of British soldiers. The Church consists of low tower,spire and projecting portico with 3 louvered gates under plain cornices with two bays and each is with white plaster niches. There is rectangular fanlight for the protection from the sunlight with a plain timber canopy.

CHUNAR FORT This fort has been a strategic location for many rulers from Babar to the Britishers. It was built by Maharaja Vikramditya, the Ujjain King. It is built 80 to 175 from the land level while spread across the area of 3400 square yard, its length is 800 yard and width is 133 to 300 yards. Sonva Mandap, Raja Bhartihari Samadhi, Bavan Khamba & Solar Watch are the praiseworthy sections inside the fort.
