Festivals Mathura

                                         
Mathura is famous for its festivals. These festivals are celebrated with a lot of fervor and enthusiasm. The true spirit of Mathura is seen in the festivals of Janamastami and Holi. Devotees throng Mathura with the hymns of Lord Krishna during the festivals.

Holi
Holi of Mathura is very popular. People from different part of country gather here to celebrate. Holi lasts for one week and is celebrated by different temples on different days. On this pious festival people throw powdered color and water on each other playfully.

Janamastami
This festival marks the birth of Lord Krishna.  During the celebration the whole city immersed in joy and echoing sounds of “Krishna, Hare Krishna”. Ceremonies take place in the temples at midnight. The idol of child Krishna is bathed and placed in a beautiful ornamented cradle. At midnight, the deity is taken out of the temple and people shove each other to get a view of the idol.

Nandotsava Festival
This festival  is  celebrated the on the day after Janamastami. It is said that on this day all the villagers of Braj (Vraj) visited Nanda’s house to have darshan of baby Sri Krishna. Nandotsav is celebrated with utmost gaiety and devotion.

Radhastami
This festival is celebrated as the birthday of Radharani. This festival falls on the eighth day, of the bright fort-night in the month of Bhadra (August-Sept), 15 days after the birth of Lord Krishna.

Govardhana Puja
This festival is celebrated during October-November on the day after Dipawali.. In most of the temples of Vridavan and Braja, huge quantities of food are prepared in this ceremony and are very sumptuously distributed to the general population. Govardhana Hill is worshiped on this day. A large hill of prasad is made in many temples. Devotees circle the hill and then honor the prasada from this hill.
