History Kapurthala

Famous for its palaces and gardens, Kapurthala is situated in Punjab. Though it is one of the smallest districts of Punjab regarding geography and population, it holds historical importance. It was princely state during the British Raj ruled by Ahluwalia Dynasty (also known as walia dynasty). Kapurthala was founded by Rana Kapur, a scion of the then ruling side of Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. Nawab Jassa Singh Ahluwalia was one of the eminent Sikh leaders whose descendant is present royal family.

He was prudent leader who managed many territories on the either side of Sutlej river and in Bari Doab as well. He also possessed a vast land in Oudh as a landholder and enjoyed a title of Raja i Rajagan. Raja Sir Jagajit Singh born in 1872, succeeded his father in 1877 and attained majority in 1890.
