Madurai Administration and Politics

On first of November 1866, the constitution of municipality of Madurai was held according to the Town Improvement Act of 1865. After the independence, in the initial days the Indian National Congress reformists dominated the municipality of Madurai. On 1st of May 1971, the municipal of Madurai was upgraded as Municipal Corporation according to the Madurai City Municipal Corporation Act, 1971. Madurai Municipal Corporation is second oldest Municipal Corporation after Chennai in Tamil Nadu. The municipality functions are divided into six departments such as:

• General Department
• Town Planning Department
• Engineering Department
• Public Health Department
• Revenue Department
• Computer Wing Department

These departments are controlled by the supreme executive head that is a Municipal Commissioner. The legislative powers are divided in 100 members, each one has 100 wards. An elected Mayor who is assisted by Deputy Mayor headed the legislative body. There are many awards which are received by corporation during 2008.
The five elected members represent the Madurai in Tamil Nadu legislative assembly. Each member is for Madurai East/West/North/Central/South constituencies. Madurai is also known as the part of Lok Sabha constituency and once after every five years the Madurai elects the member of Lok Sabha. The Member of Parliament is R Gopalakrishnan. Tamil Nadu Police enforces the law and order. There are about 27 police stations. Commissioner of Police headed the police force of Madurai city.
