Madurai Festivals

Madurai festivals are described as below:

Pongal Harvest Festival: This Festival is celebrated as one kind of way to pay the tribute to Sun, cattle and nature for serving with huge harvest. This festival is celebrated for three days with splendour and pomp. On the first, the festival is celebrated with Bogi, people paint their houses. The second day is the main day of the festival, when celebration happens with Sugarcanes, Pongal that is variety of rice in sweetness and festoons of mango leaves. On third day the Mattu Pongal is celebrated. This day, the cattle are paid tribute for bringing the prosperity. This festival is celebrated in the month of January.

Chithirai Festival: The festival is celebrated during the month of April or May. This festival celebrated on the day when the full moon appears in the sky and according to the Tamil that happens in the month of Chithirai. The story of this festival is related to lord Vishnu when he came to attend the celestial marriage of Goddess Meenakshi with Lord Sundareswarar.

Avanimoolam Festival: During the month of September this festival is celebrated, according to the legends, the coronation of Lord Sundareswarar was happened on this day. This festival is celebrated by people by performing act like Lila and other related to the 64 miracles of Lord Shiva.

Navarathri Festival: This festival is celebrated for nine days for the Goddess Meenakshi to tribute her in her nine forms, on each of nine days people celebrate the festival with nine varieties of flowers and rice meals. The nine forms of goddess embody fury, wisdom and compassion.

Festival of the Cradle: This festival is also celebrated for nine days and on these nine days people take in procession to chamber of mirror to Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar. The lord remains on the swing for nine days and are rocked gently.

Jallikattu: This is a Sport of Tamil Nadu but celebrated as a part of Pongal festival celebration. That is a famous sport held in the village with splendor and pomp. There huge amount of people can be seen who come to see the man and beast pitting in a big ground. This day is celebrated in the month of January.

Dance Festival: This festival is celebrated during the months of January, March, November and December. The Tourism Department organizes this dance festival. The festival runs for fifteen days. Many kinds of dance forms including the exponents are performed on this festival throughout the country.
