People and Language Uttrakhand

  They are addressed as Uttrakhandi though they are generally known according to the areas they belong.  For example a person from Garwal area is known as Garhwali while a person of Kumaon is called Kumauni. Apart from this, there are other existing tribes in Uttrakhand are  Jadh, Marcha, Tolcha, Shauka, Buksha, Tharu, Jaunsari, Bhotia, Raji and Gujjar according to their occupation. Caste system is rigid in villages. The upper caste  include Rajput  and the Brahamin while the lower class is called Dom.  Hindus shares  the major part of population with 85 %, followed by Muslims 10.5% and Sikhs 2.5%.
  Hindi is the official language of the state. The regional language is spoken in dialect of Kumauni of Garhwali.
 Besides agriculture, large numbers of persons recruited in army.
